Digging for Fossils

As part of our dinosaur unit, the students got to use two types of cookies to work with fossils!

First, we used "imprint" sugar cookies (The cookies were provided by Jayson Hicks and his awesome Grandmom and Mom!) to see how objects (bones, leaves, etc.) could make impressions in a surface and leave a reminder of what once was...

Then, after the kids had done an activity on what "once was" within their cookie, they got a SECOND type of cookie! The next cookies were chocolate chip of both the white chocolate and milk chocolate variety. The students had to pretend that the white chips were real dinosaur bones and the milk chocolate chips were fossils of plants. Using just a toothpick, students worked to carefully remove the "bones" from the "rock." It was a very enjoyable activity for everyone!
